Rethinking soil care in agriculture

29 Apr 2020

As part of our World IP Day blog series, we look at the role intellectual property plays in innovation.

by Paul Barrett, Head of Physical Sciences IP Group Australia

Growave is an Australian company set up to revolutionise agriculture by removing the need to use harmful chemicals to control weeds. Farmers have come under pressure to seek alternatives to these chemicals due to increasing environmental and consumer concerns over their use, herbicide resistance in weeds, as well as tighter regulation and discontinued use in parts of the world.
This is one of IP Group Australia’s first investments and is based on research from the University of Melbourne, one of our partner institutions.

How does it work?

The company’s core technology is a novel design for delivering microwaves in a highly-controlled manner, thus killing weeds and reducing soil pathogens. This can help farmers achieve healthier crops and better yields, while simultaneously reducing their impact on the environment. With Growave’s device, only the targeted soil is affected, leaving the surrounding area unaffected and there are no chemicals left to be carried in rivers and streams to pollute and damage ecosystems.

What is the IP and why is it important

Growave’s IP portfolio covers the device’s design, as well as its application and uses. As the company continues to develop, patents will provide the opportunity to release products or services that will ultimately be Growave’s unique value proposition.

As the use and effectiveness of herbicides declines, completely new and innovative solutions have been sought out. Growave’s system is one such innovation, and to have a chance at success, it will need time and resource to develop. Having strong IP protections in place helps shield the company from competitors and, by extension, means that the investment is protected. This is why technology-focused investors such as IP Group will scrutinise the IP of any potential investment.

As Growave looks to engage with potential customers and partners, the company’s IP portfolio will play a key role in convincing them that Growave has a sound technology offering, further helping the company’s future success.
